Taylor Swift was visibly moved and genuinely surprised as she won the prestigious AMA Artist of the Year for the 2nd time. Since 2007, Taylor has accumulated over 140 award nominations, and has won 90 awards, and she’s only 21! She dominated this year’s AMA’s by winning 3 awards: Artist of the Year, Favorite Country Album, and Favorite Country Female Artist. Taylor came from humble beginnings. She grew up in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, on a Christmas tree farm. She began writing songs at the young age of 5. When Taylor was in 4th grade, her 3 page poem, “Monster in My Closet” won a national poetry competition. Her parents, Scott and Andrea, recognized her talent early. When Taylor was only 11 years old – on her insistence – Taylor and her mom visited Nashville. Taylor dropped off her demo tape at nearly every record label in the area. She was understandably disappointed when the trip failed to produce any offers. But Taylor didn’t give up. At the age of 13, she was signed by RCA records. The following year, she’s made the decision to leave because the studio didn’t approve of her singing her own songs. Taylor preferred to sing her own material and maintains the same commitment today.
Taylor Swift would eventually move to Nashville at the age of 14. After seeing Taylor perform at the Bluebird Café in Nashville, Scott Borchetta, a veteran of the music industry, convinced Taylor to sign under his new record label, Big Machine Records.
In 2006, Swift released her debut single named Tim McGraw who was a big childhood influence and an inspiration to Taylor. (She wrote the song in her 9th grade math class.)
Her self-titled debut album launched her into stardom at the age of 16. By her next album, called Fearless, she was a household name. At the 2009 VMAs, even though Kanye West stormed the stage and at least attempted to ruin the biggest night in Taylor’s life, she acted with maturity quite rare at her age.
Taylor is among the most successful musicians in all genres for the past 5 years. She sold over 20 million albums (more than anyone else), and 25 million digital songs (most for any country singer), during this time.
And she is just getting started. Her 3rd, and most recent album, released in 2010, called Speak Now, is a huge success too, and it is Certified Platinum. Taylor Swift rules!
Taylor’s talent, determination and work ethics are impressive. She’s managed to stir clear of the temptations of early fame and fortune which led many others astray. (Quite a few young stars, like Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse, or Lindsey Lohan, to name just a few jeopardized their careers and image by overindulging.) Clearly, Taylor Swift is different and has not only a beautiful face, but a fine head on her shoulders. She’s a good role model for her fans and aspiring young artists. Taylor Swift rules: may she rule for many years to come!
